Case Examples

Molly's stolen credit card

Sarah and Abdul wanted to buy a house. They were referred by the Real Estate Agent to a broker to arrange finance for them. They were so excited they did not read the document the broker asked them to sign. When the time came to sign for the home loan they realised they could not afford it and did not go ahead with the purchase. Then the broker told them that they owed him $6000 for arranging the loan! They contacted Consumer Credit Legal Centre for help. This matter was very difficult because Sarah and Abdul had signed the contract. Our solicitors raised a number of consumer protection laws affecting brokers and were able to negotiate a substantial reduction in the fee. Sarah and Abdul are going to read any contracts they sign in future.

Sarah and Abdul had a problem with a finance broker

Joni was distressed when the sheriff knocked on her door wanting to take her furniture. Joni asked the sheriff what had happened. The sheriff said that there was a judgment against her and the court had issued a writ of levy of property so the sheriff could seize Joni's goods. The sheriff told Joni to contact the local court for more information. The sheriff tagged Joni's TV, stereo and washing machine and wrote down some details and then left.

Joni was sure she did not owe any debts to anyone!
